Schenectady County has awarded grant funding for park improvement projects in the Town of Niskayuna.

The projects were approved in the fall of 2019, and the funding was included in the 2019 County Budget, under the Schenectady County Parks & Greenspace Initiative. The initiative was created by the Legislature to support parks, recreation facilities and green spaces and other community projects throughout the County.

“The District 3 delegation identified a list of recreational improvements we thought would make the biggest impact on our community last summer,” said County Legislator Thomas Constantine. “Now that the funding is being distributed, Niskayuna can start to move forward with these projects.”

“With limited entertainment options this summer due to COVID-19, it is even more important to improve our local parks and recreational spaces,” said County Legislator Cathy Gatta. “These improvements will be used by residents for years to come.”

“Great local parks are a selling point to families and businesses looking to move to the area,” said County Legislator Grant Socha. “Town parks, along with the County’s preserves and forest, offer residents and visitors a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.”

“The accessibility updates planned for Blatnick Park’s splash pad and bathrooms will allow children, families and individuals with disabilities to more easily participate in activities there,” said County Legislator Sara Mae Pratt.

“These funds show the County’s continued support for parks and recreational spaces,” said County Legislator Michelle Ostrelich. “The completed projects will transform the parks into even better spaces for our children, families and residents to enjoy.”

Town of Niskayuna projects receiving funding from the County include girls softball netting at River Road Park, resurfacing of town playing surfaces (tennis, basketball, etc.), bleachers for town playing fields, additional water features for splash pad, additional picnic tables and benches for town parks, upgrade handicap accessibility to Blatnick Park bathrooms and splash pad, and youth football/cheer/lacrosse community center (Aqueduct) building.
