Schenectady County Announces Gym and Fitness Center Reopening Procedure

Schenectady County Seal

All gyms and fitness centers may open as early as Monday, August 24 within Schenectady County. To be eligible, gym and fitness facilities must affirm compliance with state guidelines prior to opening and request an inspection from Schenectady County Public Health Services (SCPHS) either prior to opening, or upon opening.

Earlier this week, Governor Cuomo announced that gyms and fitness centers can reopen in New York State starting on August 24. The state tasked local health departments with inspecting these businesses within 2 weeks of opening, to ensure compliance with state guidelines. However, the state delegated the opening of indoor fitness classes to each county. Schenectady County worked diligently to authorize the opening of these classes as early as Monday.

“Schenectady County is doing everything it can to allow gyms and fitness centers to open as soon as possible, while keeping the health of their employees and patrons a top priority,” said Keith Brown, Schenectady County Public Health Services Interim Director. “After meeting with several local businesses, we feel confident that all fitness-related facilities may open as early as Monday, as long as they meet the guidelines.”

Gyms and fitness centers must read, and be in compliance with New York State guidelines, which includes creating a business safety plan and completing an electronic affirmation. Businesses may request an inspection after these requirements have been met, either before, or upon opening. Inspections will be coordinated by SCPHS within 14 days of opening. If found non-compliant during an inspection, SCPHS will work with businesses to reach compliance with NYS guidelines.

For the latest information and links to state guidelines, or to schedule an inspection, gyms and fitness centers should visit www.schenectadycounty.com/gyms. The guidelines apply to standalone, hotel, residential and office gyms and fitness centers, gyms and fitness centers in higher education institutions, yoga/Pilates/barre studios, boxing/kickboxing gyms, fitness boot camps, CrossFit or other plyometric boxes and other group fitness classes (e.g. spin, rowing, dancing).
