Annual March & Program Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Sunday, January 19, 2014, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition of the Schenectady County Human Rights Commission will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a community rally followed by a special program, “What Role Will You Play as We Strive for Justice for All.” The featured keynote speaker for this important celebration is Dean of Albany Law School. The program will also feature music from The King Choir, which includes singers from throughout Schenectady County and Union College Gospel Choir.
The schedule for the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is as follows:
2:00pm – 2:30 pm: Community Rally (Church Fellowship Hall)
2:30pm – 4:00pm: Program & Keynote (First United Methodist Church, 603 State Street)
Dean Andrews is the 17th president and first female for the school since it opened in 1851. Dean Andrews, who was born and raised in South Africa, has extensive international experience, including teaching at law schools in Germany, Australia, Holland, Scotland, Canada and South Africa. An annual award in her name, The Penelope E. Andrews Human Rights Award—was inaugurated in 2005 at the South African law school of University of KwaZulu. She has published extensively on topics centered on gender and racial equality, South African legal issues, Australian legal issues, and international justice.
