Schenectady County office of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
The Schenectady County office of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is administered by the Schenectady County Clerk. Through our website you can find valuable links to online services which help you avoid lines, and are available 24 hours a day, from the comfort of your home.
IMPORTANT NOTICE ON TRAFFIC/SPEEDING TICKETS PROBLEMS
The Schenectady County DMV does NOT have the ability to clear traffic/speeding tickets. Please contact the Court where you got the ticket--the court must electronically clear the ticket on the DMV database--this usually takes a week. DO NOT BRING US THE RECEIPT--we can not process the transaction until your record is clear.
Special Notice: We have plate surrender boxes in both our front and rear entrances at our DMV office at 267 State Street. You can drop your plates without waiting in line and we will mail you a receipt. No $1 fee charged for the plate surrender.
Office hours 8am to 3:45 pm M-F.
Testing Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8am to 3pm. NO TESTING ON MONDAY OR FRIDAY.
DMV Tip: Early morning visits are best to avoid the lines. Mondays and Fridays are our busiest days. OUR Q-Matic “take a number” system is now operating! (See our DMV tip sheet on the left menu of our webpage.)
